Case Study: District Heating Monitoring for a University Campus

Challenge

A university campus in Northern China operated a district heating network serving 28 buildings — dormitories, lecture halls, laboratories and administrative offices. The existing mechanical heat meters were aging, with several units providing erratic readings or failing entirely. The facilities department needed a reliable replacement that could be installed without draining the heating loops, and that could communicate with their SCADA system for centralized monitoring.

Solution

The university replaced 22 aging mechanical meters with YF-E3M clamp-on ultrasonic energy meters. The installation was done during the heating season without shutting down any building’s heat supply — a critical requirement since winter temperatures regularly dropped below -10°C.

The YF-E3M’s PT1000 temperature sensors were mounted on the supply and return pipes at each building’s heat exchanger inlet, while the ultrasonic flow sensor clamped onto the supply line. The RS485 Modbus RTU output was wired to the campus SCADA network, providing real-time flow, temperature and energy data to the central control room.

Results

  • Uninterrupted heating: All 22 installations completed during the heating season with zero downtime
  • Improved accuracy: ±2.0% accuracy replaced erratic mechanical readings, enabling reliable consumption tracking per building
  • Leak detection: Abnormal flow patterns identified a previously undetected leak in a dormitory basement, saving an estimated 200 GJ per heating season
  • SCADA integration: Real-time dashboards now show energy consumption trends across all 28 buildings, supporting the university’s carbon reduction targets
  • Maintenance-free: No moving parts means no mechanical wear — the meters require no periodic recalibration or impeller cleaning

Why Ultrasonic Beat Mechanical

Mechanical heat meters use impellers or turbines that wear over time, especially in heating systems with mineral particles and debris. The YF-E3M’s non-invasive ultrasonic design has no wetted moving parts, eliminating wear and maintaining accuracy over the product’s lifetime. The 10-year data storage capability also provides the long-term records needed for energy audits and government reporting.
