A flow meter earns its place by getting data into the control system. If you are integrating a small-bore clamp-on meter with a PLC, SCADA or building controller, the outputs and how you scale them matter as much as accuracy. The YF-C3 is an RS485 Modbus flow meter with a simultaneous 4–20 mA channel and optional OCT pulse — a compact combination that covers analog and digital integration from one unit.
Outputs at a Glance
- 4–20 mA analog: proportional to flow rate, maximum loop load 600 Ω, powered from the meter loop or controller input;
- RS485 / Modbus RTU: digital rate, velocity and totalizer values for a PLC, gateway or data logger;
- OCT: optically-coupled pulse or alarm output for batch counting and high/low flow alarms;
- Power: 24 VDC at 3 W, IP54 enclosure.
Using the 4–20 mA Channel
4–20 mA is the simplest path into an analog input card. Decide the engineering range you want the loop to represent — for example 4 mA at zero and 20 mA at the maximum expected m³/h — and configure the same scaling on the meter and the PLC. Because the loop maps a chosen span rather than a fixed value, set the upper end just above your real operating flow so resolution stays high. Verify wiring polarity and total loop resistance, keeping it at or below 600 Ω.
Using RS485 Modbus RTU
For rich data without scaling loss, use Modbus RTU over RS485:
- Set a unique slave address, baud rate and parity on each meter, matching the bus master.
- Use a daisy-chained, properly terminated shielded pair; RS485 supports long cable runs in electrically noisy plants.
- Read the registers for instantaneous flow rate, velocity and net/single totalizers — the meter holds 10 years, 64 months and 64 days of accumulated data internally.
- Poll at a rate consistent with the meter’s 500 ms response; there is no benefit to scanning faster than the measurement updates.
Pulse and Alarm via OCT
The OCT channel gives an isolated contact-style signal: configure it as a totalized pulse (each pulse = a chosen volume) for batching, or as a flow-rate alarm for leak or dry-line protection. This is often the cleanest way to feed a simple batch counter without consuming an analog point.
Integrated or Split Mounting
On crowded machinery, choose the split (remote) YF-C3 so the transducer stays at the measurement point while the electronics — and their wiring — sit on a panel where they are easy to reach. For broader selection criteria, see how to choose an ultrasonic flow meter.
