Explosion-Proof Ultrasonic Flow Meter for Fuel Oil Loading & Batching

Explosion-Proof Ultrasonic Flow Meter for Fuel Oil Loading & Batching

A petroleum products terminal needed accurate, custody-transfer-grade batch measurement for diesel and fuel oil during truck and rail loading, inside a zone where ordinary electronic instruments are not permitted. The fixed YF-W200D explosion-proof transit-time ultrasonic flow meter now provides reliable flow and totalized volume with a pulse output that drives the loading batch controller.

The challenge

  • Flammable diesel and fuel-oil vapors require certified Ex equipment in the loading area.
  • Mechanical meters suffered drift from oil viscosity change and required frequent recalibration.
  • Wanted no pressure drop on the loading skid and no metering wear at high turnover.
  • Needed an immediate batch pulse plus RS485 data into the terminal SCADA system.

The solution: YF-W200D

The terminal installed the YF-W200D with a stainless insertion transducer assembly on the carbon-steel loading header. The Ex converter mounts on the skid, with the isolated OCT pulse wired to the batch preset counter and RS485 Modbus to SCADA. See the YF-W200D specifications →

  • Ex enclosure safely installed within the classified loading zone.
  • ±1% transit-time measurement is unaffected by oil viscosity and density shifts.
  • No moving parts, no wear and no added pressure drop on the skid.
  • OCT pulse gives precise batch cut-off; Modbus delivers rate and total data.

Configuration used in this application

Instrument YF-W200D explosion-proof transit-time ultrasonic flow meter
Transducers Insertion stainless assembly on carbon-steel header
Line size / material DN150 carbon steel
Fluid Diesel / fuel oil, ambient temperature
Accuracy ±1% of reading
Flow velocity 0.3–4 m/s during loading
Outputs used OCT pulse to batch controller, RS485 Modbus to SCADA
Power DC 24 V, 1.5 W

How it is deployed

  1. Hot-tap the loading header at a location with 10D upstream straight run.
  2. Insert and orient the transducer pair, then seal through the Ex gland.
  3. Wall-mount the Ex converter and wire pulse, RS485 and power through cable glands.
  4. Calibrate zero at no flow and verify batch totals against a prover run.

What the operator gets

  • Repeatable loading batches with reliable automatic cut-off.
  • No pressure-drop penalty and no recurring meter wear or recalibration.
  • Continuous rate and total visibility in the terminal SCADA.
  • Compliant Ex installation in the hazardous loading area.

Frequently asked questions

Is the YF-W200D suitable for custody-transfer fuel loading?

It provides ±1% of reading and a precise pulse output for batch totals. For fiscal custody transfer it is commonly used alongside a prover or weighing reconciliation; for internal transfer, loading and inventory control it is used directly.

Can it measure diesel and fuel oil with different viscosities?

Yes. Transit-time ultrasound responds to flow velocity and does not depend on viscosity, so accuracy remains stable across diesel, lubricating oil and fuel oil within the rated conditions.

Does insertion installation require shutting down the terminal?

Insertion on a pressurized line can use a hot-tap fitting where available; otherwise it is fitted during a short scheduled stop. Clamp-on transducers are available when no shutdown at all is possible.
