Small Pipe Flow Measurement: How to Meter DN6–DN100 Lines Accurately

Metering flow on small-bore pipe is where most conventional technologies run into trouble. Magnetic meters need a minimum line size and conductive fluid; turbine and gear meters introduce a pressure drop and wear out; cutting in an inline meter means shutdown, welding and downtime. A small pipe flow meter based on clamp-on ultrasonic technology avoids all of these problems — and the YF-C3 compact clamp-on flow meter is purpose-built for exactly this range.

Why Small Pipes Are Difficult

Below DN100 the physical envelope is tight, the wall-to-bore ratio is high, and there is little room for bulky sensors. Inline meters require isolation and drain-down, which is expensive on dosing skids, lab water and OEM equipment where the line may carry an expensive or hazardous fluid. Plant teams need a meter that installs on the outside of the pipe without breaking containment.

The Clamp-On Solution for OD 9–277 mm

The YF-C3 fits outside pipe diameters from 9 mm to 277 mm across 18 size specifications, covering roughly DN6 to DN100 and above. Because the ultrasonic transducers mount on the pipe exterior:

  • No pipe cutting, welding or shutdown — measurement is entirely non-contact;
  • No pressure drop and no wetted moving parts, so nothing wears or clogs;
  • It works on clean or low-solids liquids regardless of conductivity, including deionised and demineralised water;
  • One meter can be moved between lines, or specified permanently at a fraction of inline installation cost.

Accuracy on Small Bore

The YF-C3 delivers ±2.0% accuracy for flow velocities of 0.1–5.0 m/s, with 0.8% repeatability and a 500 ms response time. A factory-assembled magnetic snap-on bracket aligns the transducers precisely, which matters disproportionately on small pipe where a millimetre of mounting error is a larger fraction of the acoustic path. The 1.3-inch rotatable OLED shows flow rate, velocity and net/single totalizers in m³/h, LPM, GPM, L/s or LPH.

Where Small-Pipe Clamp-On Meters Are Used

  • Water treatment, purification and RO skids
  • Chemical dosing and additive lines
  • Cooling-water and equipment monitoring
  • Laboratory and pilot-plant utilities
  • OEM machinery where a conventional meter will not physically fit

If you are evaluating options, our comparison of clamp-on vs inline flow meters walks through the trade-offs, and the guide on choosing a meter by application helps narrow the specification.
