Small-Pipe Considerations
Very small lines are the harder end for clamp-on, not large ones:
- The ultrasonic path is short, so small errors in OD or wall thickness have a proportionally bigger effect on accuracy — measure precisely.
- Thin-walled or flexible tubing (small-bore plastic/hose) can give a weaker signal; rigid metal or thick-wall PVC measures best.
- Low flow velocities in small pipes are fine (transit-time reads down to ~0.01 m/s), but the pipe must be completely full — a partially filled small tube reads poorly.
- Compact, integrated clamp-on models (YF-E5, YF-C3, YF-C3M) are designed specifically for this band and for tight mechanical spaces.
Large-Pipe Considerations
- Large mains are where clamp-on’s cost advantage over inline is largest — a DN2000 inline meter body and the civil works to install it are enormously expensive; a clamp-on unit straps on externally with no shutdown.
- Accuracy holds up well on large pipes (often ±0.5% with premium units), because the long acoustic path gives a strong transit-time difference.
- Use Z-method mounting, low-frequency transducers and a generous straight run on big lined-steel, cast-iron or concrete mains; a YF-P2 portable survey is a sensible pre-purchase check on very large or unusual lines.
