Where They Are Used
Raw water & intake
Monitoring abstraction from rivers, reservoirs and boreholes, and raw-water feed to the works. Large-diameter steel or concrete lines are a natural fit for a premium fixed meter (YF-C8); abstraction reporting often needs a totalised pulse/Modbus feed to the reporting system.
Treated water & distribution mains
Clear, treated water is an ideal transit-time fluid. Fixed meters (YF-C6/YF-C8) on pump-station discharge headers and district feeders provide continuous flow and totalisation; wide pipe range and ±0.5–1.0% accuracy suit distribution monitoring and mass-balance checks.
DMA leakage & night-flow surveys
One of the highest-value portable uses: utilities divide the network into district metered areas and use a portable meter (YF-P1/YF-P2) to log minimum night flow at DMA boundaries. The night-flow minimum above legitimate night demand reveals leakage; surveys are repeated to target mains rehabilitation and confirm repairs. Pump stations
Clamp-on meters on pump discharge headers verify pump duty, detect worn/blocked pumps against their curve, and support energy-per-volume monitoring — often via GPRS on unmanned stations. Portables are used for spot pump performance tests during maintenance.
Filter backwash & process water
Clear backwash water, service water, chemical-dosing water and recycled clean streams are all transit-time friendly; fixed or compact meters monitor these smaller, cleaner lines around the works.
Energy on heating/cooling & digester loops
Where plants meter thermal energy (CHP, digester heating, site HVAC), an energy meter such as the YF-E6 totals kWh/BTU from flow and supply/return temperatures.
Wastewater and Sludge: Know the Limit
This is the important distinction for wastewater plants. Transit-time clamp-on meters (the YS-Flux range) need clean, single-phase liquid, so they work well on: treated/effluent water, final effluent discharge, relatively clear plant water, and clarified flows. They struggle on heavy solids and aerated flows — raw sewage, return/waste activated sludge (RAS/WAS), digest sludge and thickened sludge — where particles and gas scatter the ultrasound. Installation Practicalities
- Pick a full, straight run (≥10–15D upstream) away from pump turbulence and air-release points; air in the line is the commonest cause of a poor signal on water duties.
- On old cast-iron or concrete-lined mains use Z-method mounting and, for difficult signals, the high-power YF-C8; a portable survey confirms the point before fixed instrumentation is bought.
